Riders waiting for pickup

Photography generates and reflects the mythology of the biker and I put my hand up to being part of that in a small way too. Similarly, cyclists are typically portrayed as rebellious BMXers or as superhuman athletes. But what goes relatively unphotographed are the functional riders of two-wheelers: scooterists, e-bike riders and pedal cyclists, upon which our modern, internet-driven delivery systems rely. During Covid-19 they have become a key part urban life, being instrumental in the feeding of a large number of the city’s inhabitants. Of course there are many reasons why these riders are overlooked as photographic subjects; the machines are not powerful or glamorous, and the riders are not identified in terms of subculture. Other factors contribute to their invisibility too. But these riders are clearly part of life in 2020, so I've started to make photos in the hope that I might record something of them.
